Mosaic Tourism

Subway mosaic station 8 Mosaics, both historic and modern, can be found all over the world.  From ancient ruins in the Middle East to the bustling subways of New York, visiting famous mosaics can be a fun and informative way to spend a vacation – whether your trip is structured around tile sight-seeing or mosaic visits are merely a fun side trip. We’re developing a list of some of the most important and interesting mosaic sites around the globe.  From weekend road trips to flying around the world, you’re sure to find a mosaic-oriented attraction that fits into your next destination.

Sightsee while on the move when visiting New York (and many other subways around the world). Complex and highly detailed mosaics add color and variety to otherwise drab underground transit stations. Often created by local artists, the variety of mosaic art you’ll find in subways is astounding. We love the Blue and Green Seal at the Houston/Varick Street Station on the 1 Train and the whimsical flying pigs at the 6th street 4,5,6 line Downtown stop.

Across town, visit the Imagine Mosaic while taking a stroll through Central Park. Created in tribute to JohnLennon, the mosaic is often covered in flowers and photos left by fans. Plan a trip to see it soon, as the 25-year-old mosaic is beginning to show some signs of wear

Thanks to tile artist, Antoni Gaudi, Barcelona, Spain was transformed into a mosaic city in the early 1900’s. He recycled old ceramics to create his outdoor mosaic masterpieces, located all over the city. The most well known of his creations can be found in Park Güell. Be sure not to miss the famous winding bench that wraps itself around an open square or the huge mosaic lizard that climbs down a main stairway.
